As a twist to the celebrated event, Smith & Wollensky will be “pouring pink” in support of breast cancer awareness. Each year, nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die because of the disease according the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
To help uncork the cure, the restaurants will offer a special Smith & Wollensky Pink Ribbon
Pin for $10 during National Wine Week through October, with proceeds benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“National Wine Week is so highly anticipated that we are excited to use this event to support and raise awareness for breast cancer,” said Kim Giguere-Lapine, Vice President of Marketing. “We’ll be featuring ‘pink’ wine and Champagne options as part of the wine lists. We are also very excited to partner with J. Lohr who will donate $2 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation from every bottle of J. Lohr “Carol’s Vineyard” Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet poured at Smith & Wollensky restaurants across the country through October.”
The J. Lohr Touching Lives Program began four years ago in memory of Carol Waldorf Lohr, late wife of founder Jerry Lohr, who passed away unexpectedly due to complications related to breast cancer.
“Our partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation enables J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines to contribute in a meaningful way to help raise awareness for the importance of early detection,” said Cynthia Lohr, J. Lohr Vice President of Marketing. “Through sales of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from my mother’s namesake vineyard, Carol’s Vineyard, we’ve been able to fund more than 2,500 mammograms. We are thrilled that the premier steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky, is highlighting the need for early detection with initiatives in September and October that involve J. Lohr and that benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation and, ultimately, women and their caregivers facing a breast cancer diagnosis.”
Smith & Wollensky would like to thank our partners:
Château D’Esclans—Founded in 1201 and located near the Mediterranean coast. Château D’Esclans “Whispering Angel” is a rosé wine with grapes harvested by hand in the morning. The temperature is precisely controlled during the entire winemaking process.
J. Lohr “Carol’s Vineyard”—Named after the late wife of founder Jerry Lohr, J. Lohr “Carol’s Vineyard” was created to help curtail the impact of breast cancer in other families. To date, more than 2,500 mammograms have been funded during the four-year partnership.
Gérard Bertrand—Gérard Bertrand was born and raised in the South of France and began making wine with his father at the age of 10. They were recently awarded European Winery of the Year from Wine Enthusiast.
Nicolas Feuillatte—Created in 1970 by a handful of grape growers, it is now part of the largest cooperative union in Champagne. Nicolas Feuillatte is committed to initiatives in four major areas—economic development, social policy, the environment and a global approach.
The New York City location, which is owned and operated by the Fourth Wall Restaurant Group, will celebrate National Wine Week Oct. 1-5 and will not be participating in the same promotional offers as Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group.
